About the CSU Rams Baseball Team
History
When the collegiate baseball program was dropped as a Division I sport at Colorado State, the Rams Club Baseball Team was immediately accepted as a club sport. Since then, the program has won 6 NCBA National Championships in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2010.
What is club?
The main difference between the Division I program and a club sport is the budget. As a club sport, the team receives a limited annual budget from the University. The majority of the team’s funds are generated by the players and coaching staff through fundraising activities and fees. Reasons such as Title IX, lack of financial assistance from universities, and the growth of other sports have forced many universities (such as Colorado State and University of Colorado) to cut their varsity baseball programs. The creation of club teams at these universities have helped to fill the void.
Player Expectations/Schedule
Education is the number one priority at Colorado State University, however, the coaching staff expects a major commitment to this quality baseball program. The team practices Tuesday-Friday between 4:15 and 6:30pm throughout the academic year in both the spring and the fall. Classes should be scheduled around this time.
The baseball season is split into a fall and a spring season. Double headers are played on the weekends while occasional games are scheduled on weekdays during practice time. Colorado State Baseball plays an average of about 25 games in the fall and 50-60 games throughout the spring season. The team also plays numerous junior colleges in the area such as Lamar CC, Colby CC, Northeastern JC, and Trinidad State JC. The team is part of the Mid-America West Conference along with the University of Colorado, University of Northern Colorado, Colorado School of Mines, Colorado Mesa, and Wyoming.
Fees and Dues
Compared to other club sports, baseball is one of the cheaper sports to play at CSU. Player dues for Spring 2020 are $600 which cover jersey, hat, and practice shirts for each player. These are necessary to purchase new team equipment, travel, and field. Additional fundraising is required to keep the player dues low as the university gives little, to no money at all.
General Statement
The State Baseball team consists of young individuals who love to play baseball, are committed to a program of excellence, dedicated to doing their individual best, while being an integral part of a hard-working cohesive team, and are able to have fun while holding their competitive edge. To maintain the success of the program, top quality, highly motivated individuals are needed. Currently, there are several players who have contributed to successful NCAA and Junior College teams. The Colorado State baseball team provides an excellent opportunity for students wishing to further their baseball career while getting a quality education at Colorado State University.
