After a very successful weekend the Colorado State Rams were able to sweep regionals and punch their ticket to the big dance in Holly Springs, North Carolina. The Rams would clinch this spot-on commanding wins against Iowa State and University of Iowa. Here is an overview of how all the games shaped out for the Rams this past weekend in Kearney, Nebraska.
Game one of the series was a face off against Iowa State University. The Rams were unfazed as they took it to the Cyclones by a score of 10-0 in seven innings. The offense was led by many players but Brandon Delay and Matt Smith stood out the most. Delay went 3 for 4 with three doubles and recording 2 RBI, while Matt Smith also recorded a 3 for 4 day while bringing in 2 runs himself. The pitching was taken over by Phelan Castellano. Castellano was masterful in his performance on Friday night as he went seven strong innings giving up no runs on three hits while striking out six batters. This would give the Rams a 1-0 start to the tournament and would take on Iowa University in the next game. Game two was a contest between the Rams and the Iowa Hawkeyes. The Rams would emerge victorious again by a score of 13-2 against the Hawkeyes. Game two’s starter was Jared Van Vark. Van Vark went six innings giving up two earned runs and striking out six batters. He was relieved by Brad Johnson who went one inning and Ryan Wargo who went one inning as well. The offense had quite a day as three Rams went deep in the game. Brandon Delay and Mack Morford both hit solo shots in the game and in dramatic fashion, Matt Davis hit a three-run bomb over the right field fence to initiate the mercy rule and solidify the Rams victory by a score of 13-2. Game three was the championship game, the Rams would play University of Iowa once again due to the tournament being double elimination. The game started rough for the Rams as they gave up four runs early in the first inning but the Rams would turn it around very quick as they would put up a four spot of their own in the bottom of the inning. The offense was led by Trevor Bruton and Jake Walker, Bruton recorded two hits and brought in three runs while Walker recorded a double that brought in two runs of his own. The starting pitcher for the game was Clint Watt, after a rough first inning Watt locked in and went six strong innings giving up five earned and striking out one. He was relieved by Brad Johnson who gave up one run and struck out two and Mark Singleton who went two innings giving up zero runs and striking out two in the process. The final out was a ground ball to Matt Davis which punched CSU’s ticket to the NCBA world series tournament. The Rams are going to be ranked number two out of eight in the National tournament in Holly Springs, North Carolina. On April 2, 2017 the Colorado State Rams faced off against conference rival Northern Colorado University. There were only two games on this Sunday and the Rams would walk away victorious in yet another conference series.
Game one was in favor of the Rams as they slowly but surely shut down the Bears and taking the victory 8-0. The Rams offense was led by Matt Davis and Jace Evans, Davis recorded two RBI and Jace Evans recorded two RBI as well with a double. The pitching was led by Jared Van Vark who went five innings and struck out seven in the process on his way to his third straight pitcher of the week for the Mid-America conference. The game was closed down by Mack Morford who struck out all three batters he faced and secured the win for the Rams. Game two was another great offensive performance for the Rams as they took the final game by a score of 10-4. The offense was led by Matt Smith and Matt Davis as Smith went 2-4 with a triple and two RBI. Matt Davis went 1-3 with a grand slam which became the highlight of the offense. The pitching was led by Phelan Castellano who went four innings, striking out one batter and giving up one run. He was relieved by Brad Johnson who went two innings giving up two runs and was closed out by Mark Singleton who pitched an inning striking out one batter and giving up one run. The weekend of the of April 9th the Colorado State Rams faced off against conference foe, Mesa State University. The weekend included three games and they were in the favor of the Rams as the they swept the series against Mesa State. Game one was an offensive onslaught by the Rams as they took game one by a score of 15-2. The offense was led by senior Matt Smith who went 3-4 and scored all three times he made it on base. The RBI leader was Sam Hughes as he produced three RBI in the game for the Rams. The pitching was led by non-other than Jared Van Vark as he went the distance for a complete game striking out three batters and giving up only two earned runs. Game two was a much closer game but the Rams were able to edge out the Mavericks by a score of 2-1. The hitting was highlighted by a couple of key hits by Brandon Delay as he drove in the only runs for the Rams on an RBI single and an RBI double. The pitching was led by Phelan Castellano who went six strong innings only giving up one earned run and striking out eight Mavericks on the day. The game was closed out by Mark Singleton who was able to strike out one batter and shut the door on the Mavericks. Game three the Rams got back to business as they put up another huge game against Mesa State by a score of 15-1. The offense was powered by Matt Davis who crushed a homerun and recorded 4 RBI and Matt Hart who recorded a triple and 4 RBI as well. The starter was Clint Watt, Watt went four innings giving up no earned runs and striking out three batters. He was relieved by Ryan Wargo who pitched the last inning, giving up one run and sealing the deal for the Rams. Next week the Rams have a 9-inning bout against UNC in order to finish the series for conference play. Your Rams are 19-4 on the season and 8-0 in conference play. On the 25th and 26th of March, the Colorado State Rams opened their first conference series at home against border rival Wyoming. The Rams record before the games was 10-4 with no conference games played.
Game one resulted in a rout of Wyoming as the Rams put up 11 runs in a 11-0 victory to open the conference series. The game was highlighted by the spectacular pitching of Jared Van Vark as he put up a no hitter against the Cowboy. Van Vark put up six solid innings while striking out four in the process. The offense was highlighted by Mack Morford, who smashed two home runs in the game and drove in 4 runs in the process. Game two was more of a nail biter as the Rams edged Wyoming by a score of 12-7. The Rams offense got going early with the help of Jake Walker who went 3-3 with an RBI and Mack Morford who crushed another home run, driving in three runs of his own. The starting pitcher was Clint Watt, Watt went 3 1/3 giving up two runs and recording one strikeout. He was relieved by Brad Johnson who would finish the inning giving up no runs. Ryan Wargo, Chris Singleton would both setup Mack Morford to close the game in the seventh inning, recording two strikeouts and securing the victory for the Rams. Game three was another offensive onslaught as the Rams put up 13 in a 13-2 victory over Wyoming. The offense was highlighted by Matt Hart who had six RBI’s including a grand slam that shut the door on Wyoming’s hope of a comeback. The starter was Kevin Roberts, who went four strong innings giving up two runs and striking out two as well. Phelan Castellano came in to shut the door on the Cowboys to seal the deal for the Rams. Game four was a non-conference game but that didn’t slow down the Rams as they took the final game by a score of 9-3. The offense was led by Trent Weldon who went 3-3 with a homerun and 2 RBI’. The game was started by Brad Johnson who went four innings giving up two earned runs while striking out five batters. Rain would end the game early but the Rams would emerge victorious yet again. Next weekend the Rams look to take on the UNC Bears in another conference series. The Bears are 4-4 on the season and the Rams are 14-4 on the season. The games will be played in Greeley on Saturday, April 1st at 12 and 2 and Sunday April 2nd at 12 and 2 as well. The week of March 13th, the Rams baseball team travelled to Sunnyvale, California in a six-game tournament. The teams included St. Mary’s college, Chico State University, Northern Arizona, Miramar University, and Washington State University.
Game one of the tournament was a bout against St. Mary’s University. This was the only hiccup of the tournament for the Rams as the Rams would fall by a score of 5-3. The offense for the Rams was highlighted by Matt Davis, who recorded two hits with a run scored and Matt Hart who drove in two of the Rams runs. The pitching was led off by Phelan Castellano, he went four innings giving up three earned runs and four total runs. The Rams attempted a comeback in the late innings but were unsuccessful as St. Mary’s University took the inaugural game from the Rams. Game two was a complete turnaround for the Rams as they smoked Chico State by a score of 15-0. The onslaught was led by two specific players in Mack Morford, who went 2-3 with a home run and 3 RBI’s and Matt Davis, who had a monster game going 3-3 with two home runs and an astounding 8 RBI’s. On the bump was sophomore pitcher Jared Van Vark, who went four strong innings giving up zero runs and striking out two Chico State players. Game three was a face off against the hosts of the tournament, Washington State University. This game was more of the same for the Rams as they put up 19 runs in a 19-3 victory over Washington State. The offense had a field day at the plate as Mack Morford and Brandon Severinsen highlighted the high-octane offense. Morford went 3-4 with a homerun and 5 RBI’s while Severinsen put up a 2-5 day with a homerun and 4 RBI’s. The pitching performance was led by Clint Watt, as he only gave up one run on five innings pitched while striking out three. The door was shut on Washington State by Ryan Wargo and Sean Suelter, solidifying the victory for the Rams. Game Four featured the Rams versus Miramar University. For the Rams, it was just another fantastic day at the park as they routed Miramar University 14-2. The Rams were led by starter Kevin Roberts who went 5 and a third only giving up two runs and striking out four. At the plate, it was more of the same offense for the Rams as veteran players Matt Smith and Matt Davis led the charge against Miramar University. Smith went 2-3 with 3 RBI’s and Davis went 1-3 with a homerun and racking up even more RBI’s by adding 4 more to his resume for the tournament. In Game five the Colorado State Rams faced off against top 20 ranked Northern Arizona in a nail biter which saw your Rams emerging victorious by a score of 8-7. The start was given to Jared Van Vark who went four strong innings striking out three and giving up no runs. The tide quickly turned for the bullpen as they recorded 6 earned runs and 7 total runs in the remaining five innings of the game. This didn’t halt the offense though as the Rams offense was led by Matt Davis and Brandon Severinsen. Davis drove in two runs on one hit while Severinsen changed the momentum of the game with a towering shot into right field for his second homerun of the tournament as it put the Rams back in the game against Northern Arizona. After the Rams put up the go ahead run in the eighth inning, Mark Singleton came in to shut the door on Northern Arizona and solidified the victory for the Rams. The final game of the tournament was played against Chico State in which the Rams pounded the Wildcats 19-8. The big guns on offense were Trevor Bruton, who tallied a homerun and 4 RBI’s and Matt Hart who also hit a homerun and drove in 4 runs. Phil Miller got the start but exited the game in two innings giving up 5 earned runs. The game was then taken over by Brad Johnson who pitched five strong innings striking out two batters and giving up zero runs. The Rams would become the tournament Champions with a 5-1 record and putting up an astounding 78 runs on the trip. The Rams would return home on Tuesday night, March 22nd to face Metro State in an exhibition game. The Rams beat down on Metro State winning 21-2. The offense was led by Matt Davis who went 5-5 with 4 RBI’s on the day and Matt Hart who went 2-2 with 3 RBI’s. In the later innings of the game Jared Van Vark launched a home run to left field for a grand slam that slammed the door on Metro State. The pitching was led by starter Phil Miller who went three innings giving up two runs, he was followed up by Mack Morford, Phelan Castellano, and Matt Mader who closed out the game for the Rams. In the upcoming week, your Colorado State Rams will face off in a conference series against Wyoming University starting on Saturday March 25, 2017. On March 4, 2017, the CSU Rams faced off with Air Force in a double header and this would be the start of a slew of games for the Rams that weekend. The weekend also included a double header against Western Nebraska on Sunday and a night cap game on Tuesday against Metro State. Game one of the Air Force double header featured a Rams victory in handy fashion, with the final score being 7-0. The Rams were led by the superb pitching performance by Phelan Castellano, as he threw 5 innings of scoreless baseball while striking out 5 Falcons on the day. The offense was led by a number of players including Matt Davis who led the team in hits with 2 on the day and driving in one of the runs. Jared Van Vark was another player who had himself a day as he went 1 for 2 with 2 RBI’s and 4 stolen bases in the game. Then Ryan Wargo came in to shut the door on game one and sealing the victory for the Rams. Game two was just more of the same in both fronts for the Rams. Phil Miller got the start on the bump, going 5 strong innings and only giving up one earned run and another unearned run. He went on to strike out 7 batters on just 66 pitches. The offense was highlighted by Sam Hughes who delivered a bases clearing double. Both Brandon Severinsen and Matt Hart recorded two hits and an RBI each in the 12-2 victory over the Air Force Falcons. Game three occurred on Sunday against Western Nebraska Community College, in another double header. Unfortunately for the Rams they could not pull out the win this time, going down 7-3 in a hard-fought game. The Rams offense struggled to get anything going throughout the game only recording 5 hits on the day including a Jake Walker double. Clint Watt got the start on the mound and went 6 innings but unfortunately giving up 5 runs and 2 earned on the day. Game four went in a complete opposite direction as the Rams routed the Cougars 10-2. The Rams were led on the bump by Jared Van Vark who pitched 5 strong innings and giving up only one run, he was followed up by Kevin Roberts who shut the door on the Cougars by putting up 2 strong innings to seal the deal. At the plate, the Rams hitters had quite a field day as three players recorded multiple hit games. Led by Matt Davis who recorded an astounding 4 RBI’s on two hits including a double. On Tuesday March 7, the Rams faced off against the Metro State Roadrunners in a night cap game. The Rams prevailed over Metro State but in nail biter as the Rams won 7-6. The Rams pitching staff struggled a bit at first but slowly got stronger as the game went on, led by Brad Johnson who came in in relief, pitching four strong innings striking out 6 Roadrunners. The offense suffered the same effect as the pitching staff by starting out slow. As the game progressed, the Rams bats came alive. Jace Evans recorded two hits including a triple and driving in one run. The game was tied going into the bottom of the eighth when Matt Smith hit a ball deep to center field and produced a sacrifice fly that scored Cody Byrnes and recorded the winning run. Final score Rams 7 and Roadrunners 6. In the week ahead the Colorado State Rams look to continue their success in a tournament in Sunnyvale, California. The Rams will be playing six games in the tournament and are aiming to take every single one. The teams included will be Northern Arizona, Chico State, Washington State, and many more. The tournament starts March 13th when the Rams will take on St. Mary’s College. |
